"Dealings with artists requires great prudence; they are acquainted with all classes of society, and for that very reason, dangerous..." ~ Leopold I
Salvador Dali was a Spanish surrealist artist with a unique perspective when painting. The shading in his self portrait gives it a sense of the third dimensional, as if you could reach out and touch the soft 'skin'. I appreciate that his self portrait is unconventional, and it portrays his face, including his tell-tale mustache, as if it were melting away. The dreamlike influence of surrealism is seen in tenfold, as it follows in the same footsteps as one of his most famous pieces, The Persistence of Memory. Remedios Varo Uranga was a Spanish-Mexican surrealist artist whose work often referenced spiritual or fantastical concepts. She perfectly balances realistic qualities with those of the imagination. The color palette of her self-portrait utilizes the warmer red and auburn against the cooler white and blue within herself and the unicorn to make them stand out. The great detail found within the leaves and branches of the trees and her fur coat are exquisite, and it truly gives the piece interest. Some honorable mentions for my favorite self portraits (listed from left to right).
